Long and Short-Haired Cat Grooming

Long and short-haired cat grooming. Many cat owners will encounter various difficulties when choosing a cat, such as the breed of cat, the size of the cat, whether the cat is long or short, and so on.

The reason why they struggle with these is related to the care of cats in the future. Many cat owners think that long-haired cats are beautiful but difficult to take care of, while short-haired cats are easier to take care of.

Let’s take a look at the care methods of long-haired cats and short-haired cats respectively.

1. Is it better to choose a Long-haired cat or a Short-haired Cat?

Feeding a short-haired cat takes less time than feeding a long-haired cat. It grooms itself, so you don’t have to do much to get its coat in order. Short-haired cats are not as often matted as long-haired cats. Wound care and parasites are relatively easy.

Characteristics of Short-haired Cats

You only need to groom your shorthair cat once a week, as it will do it on its own.

There is a well-known short-haired cat called the Siamese cat. This cat likes to bark to attract people’s attention. Its hobbies are a bit like dogs.

Shorthairs are generally more active and independent than longhairs. If you have a busy life, a shorthair may be the best choice.

Characteristics of Long-haired Cats

Long-haired cats need to be groomed every day, otherwise, the fur will become tangled and messy. Also, try a “knot-breaking comb”.

If you like long-haired cats but don’t have time to groom them every day, consider buying a half-haired cat. Their coats are long, but their undercoats are short.

2. How to take care of and clean Short-haired and Long-haired Cats?

Grooming of Long-haired Cats

Wild long-haired cats only shed their hair in winter and spring, while domestic long-haired cats shed their hair all year round.

Therefore, domestic long-haired cats must be combed every day, preferably twice a day, for 15-20 minutes each time.

If not combed, the coat will become felted and difficult to comb. Sometimes, you will have to anesthetize the cat and use scissors to remove the felt.

Clipping felt while you are awake tends to injure the surrounding skin. One of the combs commonly used for long-haired cats is: scraping brush, steel wire bristle brush, dense-toothed wide-toothed comb, and toothed comb.

Grooming of Short-haired Cats

Shorthair cats have long tongues and can comb themselves. Therefore, short-haired cats do not need to be groomed every day, just twice a week.

If the cat owner combs the cat too much, the cat will not comb it by itself. Usually, the cat owners can hold the cat in their arms.

He should brush the cat with his hands, not tools. This will smooth your fur while increasing your friendship and hospitality with your cat.

The common methods for grooming short-haired cats are dense tooth comb, soft bristle brush, rubber brush, tanning towel, etc.

Generally speaking, long-haired cats and short-haired cats have their own advantages and disadvantages. It takes more time to raise a long-haired cat.

You can choose the cat that suits you according to your time, work, and financial ability, and you don’t have to worry too much about long-haired cats or short-haired cats.
